Two years have passed since I last walked through the doors of New World Guangzhou Hotel. This visit happened to be the third stop on the New World Hotels & Resorts Greater Bay Area tour, and it coincided with Lingnan’s most lingering season – summer still clinging on, the heat not quite ready to fade, with a lazy, full-bodied mood drifting through the air. This time, I came not to rush, but to step back into this space filled with Guangzhou’s stories, and to take a proper look at all the design details I had hurried past two years ago.
The moment I entered the lobby, I was once again struck by its exquisite artistry. Grey is the dominant tone here – steady as a canvas, gently holding every line of sight – while splashes of blue furniture scattered throughout seem like accidentally spilled paint, adding a lively touch to the cool-toned backdrop.
At the front desk, I deliberately slowed down the check-in process, because every corner of my vision was filled with “Guangzhou elements” – a ram’s horn installation stood quietly in a corner, its minimalist form instantly recognisable as the symbol of the City of Rams. Beside it, a Cantonese puzzle map pieced together fragments of local imagery to trace the city’s fabric, as if old streets, arcade houses, and dim sum steamers had been condensed onto a single board.
These local cultural embeddings never felt forced; they blended seamlessly with the modern design framework – the geometric forms of the furniture were crisp and clean, mirrored pillars doubled the spatial depth through reflection, and the pendant lights hanging from the ceiling looked like floating beads of light. A contemporary, fashionable energy flowed quietly through these details, turning the lobby into an overture to Guangzhou.
The Executive Suite I stayed in this time measured 95 square metres, with spaces clearly defined and naturally transitioning between functions, without a trace of abrupt partitioning. The living room was spacious enough to make you want to sprawl into the sofa; a welcome fruit platter sat on the coffee table, while the dining table nearby hinted that this could easily transform into a small gathering place – whether for hosting friends or enjoying solitude, entirely up to you.
The open walk-in wardrobe was unexpectedly generous in size – even two large suitcases from a long trip could be laid out side by side with room to spare. Hat shelves, drawers, and hanging rods each had their place, allowing every item of clothing to be properly stored without encroaching on the main living areas. Such ease is a rare find in city hotels where space comes at a premium.
Moving into the bedroom, the atmosphere shifted to warmer tones, with light spilling softly from bedside wall lamps and hidden light strips, casting a delicate sheen over the bedding. The bathroom struck a perfect balance between elegance and practicality. The double vanity meant morning routines no longer required compromise – each person had their own mirror and faucet, enjoying equal ease and privacy.
In your spare time, do take a moment to relax by the hotel’s outdoor pool. It is hard to imagine that amidst this concrete jungle, there exists such a tranquil space built into a rooftop garden – an urban oasis that instantly puts you at ease. On a clear day, lying on a poolside lounger and soaking up the sun while taking in the city views – such an exceptional experience – would you not want to give it a try?
