Not just a hotel stay, but a slow reacquaintance with a city’s design language

  • July 15, 2026

Two years have passed since I last walked through the doors of New World Guangzhou Hotel. This visit happened to be the third stop on the New World Hotels & Resorts Greater Bay Area tour, and it coincided with Lingnan's most lingering season – summer still clinging on, the heat not quite ready to fade, with a lazy, full-bodied mood drifting through the air. This time, I came not to rush, but to step back into this space filled with Guangzhou's stories, and to take a proper look at all the design details I had hurried past two years ago.

The first five-star hotel in Taishan, and perhaps the first to make heritage its true centrepiece

Before coming to Taishan, my understanding of the term "hometown of overseas Chinese" remained purely literal. It was not until I set foot on this land that I truly understood why it is called "China's number one hometown of overseas Chinese", and why people speak of "two Taishans – one at home and one abroad."

Not until I stirred tea‑leaf dip into hotpot did I understand what “local” really means

This time at New World Qingyuan Hotel, I had no intention of rushing to any sightseeing spots. I simply wanted to follow the resort's own rhythm, immerse myself in the local way of life, and spend two or three days feeling both fulfilled and completely at ease. The hotel itself is a healing mountain retreat – natural wood finishes paired with hillside views, and rooms with comfortable balconies where just staying in feels wonderfully relaxing. The real surprise, however, was the set of carefully curated activities that you can slowly join in, each offering a genuine sense of participation.

With private pools under the stars and silence in the trees, summer finally makes sense

Living in Beijing for too long, summer had long been welded to a sticky, suffocating heat – the city's warmth is cloying, and even the breeze carries a restless edge. So when I finally saved up enough leave and headed straight for the coolness hidden in the mountains of Qingyuan, my heart was full of anticipation. This trip was not about ticking off sights – I just wanted to throw myself into the wild, soak in the hot springs, and finally catch my breath.
