The Ultra‑Luxury Retreat on Hangzhou’s West Lake

Early summer in Hangzhou – sunlight ripples across the shimmering waters of West Lake, while the breeze carries the fragrance of tea leaves and the lush green of the season. Millennia of culture flow quietly through the landscape. Drawn by the timeless elegance of the lake, I embarked on a homeward journey where nature, art, and culture intertwine — *The Silk Lakehouse, Shangri-La Hangzhou. *

As the world’s first boutique hotel under Shangri-La Group‘s new ultra‑luxury brand Shangri-La Signatures, The Silk Lakehouse is nestled in the very heart of West Lake. From the Xiling Hotel — a state‑guesthouse for foreign dignitaries in the 1960s — to the first Shangri-La on the Chinese mainland in 1984, and now this 2025 rebirth, the property has been a quiet witness to Hangzhou’s evolving story over half a century. Inspired by the home of a Jiangnan silk merchant, it brings together Eastern elegance and modern luxury in perfect harmony.

Step into the lobby, and the summer heat and city noise immediately dissolve. Your gaze is instantly captured by the Willow Waves and Orioles Singing crystal chandelier — 1,930 handcrafted pieces of Murano glass gently suspended from Italy, their shifting light evoking willow fronds brushing the lake’s surface, drawing the soft mist of West Lake indoors. Outside, the Cascade Pool — designed by the renowned landscape architect Liu Yanjie — flows gently. The ancient Fenglin stone tablet, nestled beside the water, whispers stories of the past. Here, modern water features and historic relics coexist, each step a living poem.

The hotel reinterprets Chinese aesthetics through a lens of refined maximalism. Warm wood and gentle stone echo each other, soft curves mirroring the texture of water. Silk motifs, leaf carvings, and locally inspired accents appear throughout, subtly evoking the grace of Jiangnan’s waterways and silk culture — understated, yet unmistakably luxurious. The lush gardens that embrace the property are like a jade crown, their beauty unfolding with every season. To stay here is to live in a secluded garden on the shores of West Lake.

The guest rooms offer an immersive experience on a grand residential scale. The Lake Reflection Room maximises both the view and the sense of occasion. Delicately carved Chinese latticework and floor‑to‑ceiling windows transform the scene into a living painting — lake and mountain views by day, wooded hills at dusk. The suites draw inspiration from the Peacock Garden, with a fresh palette of pale blue and warm white, accented by natural motifs, and a creatively designed peacock‑shaped bed.

What truly sets the hotel apart is the Personal Host Programme, offering bespoke, attentive service. Immerse yourself in intangible cultural heritage experiences — tea ceremonies, incense‑making, seal carving, and traditional Hangzhou fan‑crafting — each one a doorway into Hangzhou‘s profound cultural soul. Meanwhile, the in‑room Bryte smart mattress — making its Asia debut — cares for you body and mind through every moment of your stay.

At sunset, ascend to the 270° Sky Garden Terrace. Below you, the Ten Scenes of West Lake unfold like a painted scroll — Leifeng Pagoda in the Sunset, Dawn on the Su Causeway in Spring, Lingering Snow on the Broken Bridge — all within a single glance, along with the timeless lake and hills against the city’s skyline. Whether bathed in the soft light of dawn or wrapped in the fiery hues of dusk, each moment offers a spectacle of West Lake that belongs uniquely to The Silk Lakehouse.
